One of the major goals of responsible tourism is to protect and encourage the uniqueness of a destination. Regulations and conventions exist to ensure just this, particularly where historic and archaeological artefacts are concerned and are at risk from exploitation by international trade. With increasingly lax enforcement and an increase in interest for these kinds of artefacts, tourism is integral to their protection while promoting the region's history.
Unless permitted by law, historical and archaeological artefacts should not be sold, traded or displayed.
